As with most things in life, there are legalities associated with photography. Contrary to what many people believe, a photo on a web site, social media, or anyplace else on the amazing Internet are not “free” to take, use, modify, or share as you like.
At first, I was flattered when someone wanted to use one of my photographs for their Facebook profile picture, and I still am. But then someone altered one. Not in a bad way, but it was done without my permission and publicly posted as if it were their work. It was even printed – again not for a bad purpose, but without my permission or any credit for where it came from. So now I take steps to protect my work.
I will share my work freely under certain circumstances, but it is done by mutual agreement. This doesn’t come from visiting my web site and doing a “right click/save,” unless I specifically allow it, as I do in certain galleries. But trust me, there’s a much better quality image available than what you can snipe from my web site. I have the full, hi-resolution file available of everything presented here. Those files will produce high quality prints, and I can professionally print up to 13″ X 19″ photographs for you.
In any case, there are legally binding document and agreements which cover your rights and mine. These are some examples.
